BMO Eco Smart Mortgage Blog Tour - Win a $50 RONA Gift Card!

When we first bought our home over five years ago, we didn't realize how much work needed to done and how much needed to be replaced. It wasn't long after we moved in that we decided to replace all of our major appliances, our air conditioning system, a couple of windows and our toilet bowls. For all of these items, we looked at energy efficient and eco-friendly models. Take, for example, our washing machine. We went with an LG Energy Star rated, high-efficiency, front-loading model that uses very little water and requires very little detergent (which I just recently discovered).


Our refrigerator is also an LG Energy Star rated model. Our new air conditioning system proudly shows off the blue Energy Star sticker to our neighbours. And about a year ago, I reluctantly let a door-to-door salesman fast talk me into having our water heater replaced. It, too, has the Energy Star rating and is supposed to help reduce costs.


We even went so far as replacing our toilet bowls with low-flow models. I don't think we'll stop there, though. We'll probably join nearly half of Canadian homeowners who plan on investing in energy efficient upgrades in the next year. And to encourage this positive trend, BMO has introduced a special Eco Smart mortgage rate.
For Canadians who meet BMO’s energy efficiency criteria, The BMO Eco Smart Mortgage is a new mortgage product with market-leading five-year fixed rate of 3.89 per cent – a rate significantly lower than comparable green mortgage products.
Green mortgages are a new concept to me. So as a part of this blog tour, I downloaded a BMO Eco Smart Mortgage checklist to see if I would qualify. Unfortunately, our home didn't meet the minimum requirement of 6 out of 7 categories in the checklist. I'm starting to think maybe we should look at replacing doors and the rest of the windows next. These are just a few of many renovations we are willing to consider. But, seeing as we have a 4-level side-split with cathedral ceilings, we don't have an attic so I'm not sure if that category would even be considered in our case.     we have done all the small things like low flow taps and shower headsm and energy effiecient lighting, what really needs to be done in our home is the windows really need replacing with new energy effecient ones that keep the heat in in the winter

    I'd like to replace the picture window in our living room. We've replaced a few windows already with Polar Windows, but the front window is quite expensive, but would make a big difference- especially in the winter with the north winds we get!

    We've changed all of our light bulbs to energy saving types and bought energy efficient appliances when we moved in. Also, installing a programable thermostat seems to have made a small difference in our heating as well.
