Celebrate Oral Health Month With Arm and Hammer and a Giveaway!
Monday, April 25, 2011
April is considered National Oral Health Month and the Canadian Dental Association wants us to remember the importance of good oral health. The best way to ensure a healthy mouth is to visit your dentist regularly. But that's not all.
Along with your dentist, you also play an important role in maintaining good dental health and in preventing oral disease. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day, limit food and beverages with a high sugar or acid content in your diet and avoid all tobacco products. Finally, if you see or feel anything irregular in your mouth, talk to your dentist immediately.Ever since I was a little girl, I would often get more cavities than I would care to admit. My penchant for chocolate, caramel, toffee, and candies was largely the cause of my dental woes. I also had poor dental hygiene habits. It was very distressing to know that every dental visit cost my parents a good fortune since they did not have any dental benefits, nor do they today. My father lost all of his teeth at a very young age and has had false teeth ever since I can remember. It is understandable why he indulged one Christmas and bought all three of us a battery powered toothbrush. I found it quite touching really. He didn't want us to suffer the way he did. Once I reached age 16, my pediatric dentist advised me to find another dentist who treated adults. But I didn't. Not until, that is, one of my fillings along with half the tooth had fallen out and required a root canal along with surgery to fix the receding gum line. Luckily, by that time, I had already started teaching full-time and took advantage of dental benefits. The procedures were painful and not fully successful as I discovered last year when the pain returned. They discovered a fifth root that hadn't appeared in the original x-ray. So another root canal (and one unsightly hole in my expensive crown) later, I find myself with a permanent reminder to teach better dental hygiene habits to my own two children.
This is why I am excited to share with you the ARM & HAMMER® My Way! ® battery-powered toothbrush for girls and boys. This customizable battery-powered toothbrush not only promotes brushing by making it fun, it helps to remove plaque while massaging the gum. The smaller brush head is suited for smaller mouths and is easy for little hands to operate. My favourite feature is the ability to customize the Spinbrush handle with a large variety of stickers that are included in each pack. And what kid doesn't love stickers, right? As a French teacher, I also appreciate that the Sprinbrush À Moi also includes accents. C'est très utile pour ceux dont leur nom contient des accents comme, par exemple, Émilie.
My daughter suggested we start with the letter stickers first. Then, after successful brushing, she can pick a sticker reward to apply to the brush handle. Just remember that the handle must dry before applying the stickers. There are so many to choose from!
As part of this review, I was super lucky to test out a brush for me as well! It's the ARM & HAMMER® Spinbrush Pro Clean Sonic Battery Powered Toothbrush. I am really excited that I have my own since I haven't owned a battery powered toothbrush since my father bought me one as a kid. It is great for getting that straight-from-the-dentist-chair feeling and I love how it really massages the gum. It's also great for reaching wisdom teeth that are otherwise hard to get to. I was also able to try out the Arm & Hammer toothbrush for the first time and I actually like it. I was also tempted to open up the NEW ARM & HAMMER® Spinbrush GloBrush but I think I'll use it as a gift for an older child. It features a two-minute timer with quadrant technology and lights up in a new colour every 30 seconds signalling the user to move on to the next section of the mouth. It's that brilliant? J'adore la technologie!

I find that modelling good oral hygiene behaviour works for us. When my son won't brush I bring out mine and show him that Mommy brushes too. Sometimes I even let him help me brush my teeth. He thinks it's funny and then he lets me brush his teeth.

We encourage good oral hygiene by buying products that the kids like to use. We use kids spin electric toothbrushes.

Mandatory Entry - When my kids were little I would read to them while they brushed their teeth. If they quit brushing I quit reading. They enjoyed the story time so it encouraged them to brush properly instead of rushing through and not spending enough time.

Good oral hygiene can be encouraged by allowing your child to choose the toothbrush and toothpaste they would like to use. If they are actively involved in choosing their own products they may be more likely to want to brush their teeth.

i found that going to the dentist for regular cleanings really helped as when they got the thumbs up no cavities from the dentist they really wanted to keep it that way , and it has always just been a part of our routine , so for them it is just a natural thing to do

A tip that our family follows is the kids timer. We had trouble getting them to brush long enough so we bought a timer. They love it.

Good oral care starts with letting the child making some choices. What I mean is I let them choose their toothbrush and toothpaste, and they will participate in a routine that becomes rewarding because of their choices. I find them more willing if they can choose.

My son has unfortunately had a lot of dental issues (and he's only 7!) so I've had to work really hard to ensure he takes good care of his teeth. One thing that helped, especially when he was younger, was to buy lots of different toothbrushes and toothpastes. He'd be interested in a new one for awhile...then'd I'd move on to something else to keep him interested.

I encourage hygiene amongs kids since I am the Tooth Fairy online who tweets! At my real dental job I explain to them that sugarbugs are nastey and to fight them we must brush and floss them off!

I encourage good oral hygiene with my 3 yr old granddaughter everytime she sleeps over. We brush our teeth together 2x a day and she always brushes her tongue. She has been taught the correct way to brush and has continued this practice. She enjoys brushing her teeth with grandma, as I do with her :-)

ReplyDeleteI always make sure my kids brush and floss daily. They regularly go to the dentist and have never had a cavity!

We sing the alphabet twice while we brush to make sure we're brushing long enough. |It sounds funny with a toothbrush in your mouth and the kids love that.
