The 2011 JUNO Awards Red Carpet, etalk Lounge and Digital Media Room Photos
Monday, March 28, 2011The 2011 JUNO Awards show saw many talented artists unite in celebration of musical work by both the young and not so Young. The show was hosted by Drake, who serenaded recently inducted Canadian Music Hall of Famer Shania Twain and offered to make her feel like a woman. The piano rendition of Snow's Informer was a brilliant touch. On stage, each performance clearly demonstrated the amazing Canadian ingenuity that has hit the music scene, notably independent artists Arcade Fire and Down with Webster. Toronto-raised K'naan took home a well-deserved JUNO for Single of the Year on behalf of Young Artists for Haiti. All in all, it was an awesome night.

From the comfort of my own home, I was able to take part in CTV's Digital Media Room which included a live video stream of the interviews as they took place backstage at the JUNOS. Participants were invited to share their questions and I am happy to say that one of my questions was heard by K'naan. In response to the question on his motivation to perform during Free the Children's We Day, he replied that We Day is a combined effort and that artists partake in such events because they feel a compelling urge to do so. Other noteworthy moments in the media room included Shania's attempt to put into words, en français, how special this day was to her. Elle a bien réussi. Neil Young also discussed his radical idea that all music should be free to allow for universal access, at least at a low-quality streaming level, pointing out that Sam the Record Man never charged people to walk into the store and listen to a record before buying it. Near the end of the night, Arcade Fire appeared, notably happy and proud of their achievements. It was a truly unique opportunity to witness in vivo the excitement of the Media Room. Thank you to CTV for extending me the invitation and for providing the photos above.
