The Cadbury Bicycle Factory
Monday, June 06, 2011
Recently, I learned about The Cadbury Bicycle Factory which builds bikes to deliver to children in rural Ghana to help them travel the long distances to and from school. As of today, they have built and delivered over 9,000 specially designed bikes. This year, they are hoping to build more.
Canadians can participate by purchasing participating Cadbury products and uploading the UPC to www.thebicyclefactory.ca. Each UPC code equals one virtual bike part and for every 100 parts donated, one real bike is created and delivered to communities in Ghana. These bikes are beneficial in providing safe travel to school and can also act as an ambulance, water delivery vehicle and much more.
I have been a fan of Cadbury chocolate for as long as I can remember and to this day I still have a hard time saying no to a Cadbury egg or a Caramilk bar. I am also thrilled to know that they now sell Fair Trade Dairy Milk bars here in Canada, which count towards two bicycle parts. So I couldn't resist the opportunity to host a giveaway for TWO baskets full of Cadbury products which will include chocolate bars, candies and gum, enough to total 100 bike parts. That's a lot of goodies!
This contest is now closed. Scroll down to the end of the post to see who won.
For a chance to win one of two gift baskets full of Cadbury products, watch one of the short documentaries on thebicyclefactory.ca. Come back here and share what you learned about why bicycles are so beneficial or share something you learned about Ghana that you found interesting. Leave a comment on this post along with a way to contact you if win. (This is not necessary if your Google Profile has an email listed on it.)

The bikes are specially made and are called “Nframa”, the Ghanaian word for “wind.” The bikes are very beneficial for getting children to school. I like this project and enjoy participating.
