The sun is shining.
The air is hot.
I decide to head out to the neighbourhood park with my then five year old daughter and two year old son before the clock reached high noon. I lather on the sunscreen and quickly fill some water bottles before rushing out the door. About two thirds of the way there, I realize my kids haven't had much in the way of a mid-morning snack. Panic ensues. Do I make the trek back home in the hopes that I might find something in the cupboards, dragging two reluctant kids who just want to play? Or do I make a slight detour to the nearest store, smile at the kids and tell them we're going shopping? Of course, they love shopping. So off we go.
Once we reach the little plaza, we make a bee-line towards the drugstore nestled in the corner where I knew I could find some snacks. As the kids begin to fuss, my heart rate begins to grow faster. I scan the aisles in the store and find their snack session. What should I buy that I know the kids would love? And then, as if it were a sign from above, a hint of gold catches my eye. Goldfish Made with Whole Grain. Yes! Baked with real cheese, whole grain? Perfect. I quickly pay for our snack and head out to the park where we sat at the picnic table enjoying our Goldfish moment in the shade. The kids are quiet, their bellies content and mom can breathe a sigh of relief. Breakdown averted.
Recently, there has been an addition to the Goldfish family - Goldfish Grahams! There are two yummy flavours that have been making a splash over the past few months: Chocolate and Honey. I tend to procrastinate and leave packing to the last minute, which means I am usually in a rush to head out the door. Sometimes I just need something quick to have in the car while we are on the road to my parents' place. I have a feeling the chocolate Goldfish Grahams will become quite popular in our home.

Everyday is a goldfish day. My kids love having little fishie friends to stave off starvation when they get home from school. We pair them with apples and cheese.

I remembered one time that we bought our little girl to a beach and while we trying to set things up, all of a sudden, our little girl said "Mommy, look, my fish wants to go and swim with me" and when I looked at her, she was having one of her Goldfish snack on hand. I found that it was so cute at that moment that she wanted to bring her "fish" to swim with her.

One of our favourite books when my girls were little was our goldfish book. Each page had indents where they could put the actual crackers into the pictures! They had fun counting the crackers as they gobbled them up off the page. So not only were the crackers yummy, they were educational too!! :)

I snacked on goldfish for the first time at my best friends house...over 20 years ago! while playing super mario on the original nintendo entertainment system. Today my nephews (age 4 & 7) do the same thing! except maybe with a slightly update gaming system ;-)

My favorite most recent Goldfish memory is from this past summer helping friends build their cabin. There is not much around the area so we bring our own meals/snacks. I remember a great weekend with good friends, great weather and Goldfish crackers to keep us going!

While in Disneyland I was faced with 2 hungry, cranky kids who were both going through picky eating phases. My saving grace was a kids meal pack that contained a baggie of goldfish crackers. Crisis averted and we could move on with enjoying our day :)

ReplyDeleteI love gold fish crackers, especially the cheddar ones. I haven't had goldfish in such a long time. I think the last memory I remember of them is whenever I ate them I bite their heads first and think poor fishy lol.Also, I tried a couple years ago to make homemade goldfish crackers.They were really yummy, but of course not exactly the same as the original.Plus I love to actually try out their other flavors.

Goldfish was the only snack my oldest would eat at school when he was in Kindergarten. Most days I would pick him up and the teacher's assistant would say that he refused to eat snack and I would always feel guilty that he hadn't eaten and that he was giving her a hard time. But on days when they had Goldfish, pick-up was always stress-free!

Oh wow-Goldfish crackers have been around our house for ages. When my children were younger,they were my life saver many a time when I needed a little snack to keep them occupied. Once in particular I remember taking both my boys to the grocery store and what a nightmare it was. I don't know what I was thinking...but there I was all alone with 2 cranky whiny little boys. If not for the Goldfish crackers, it would have been a full blown melt down. We still eat them, all of us as a snack or in soup...good old Goldfish crackers. :-)
