Basic Cable is No Longer Basic
Friday, March 16, 2012
This week, my husband and I bought a new vehicle since my husband's truck is pretty old and run down. As a result, we have been looking at ways in which we can reduce our expenses. We decided we could do without our VIP Digital Cable package and go back to basic. The only thing is... there is no more 'basic.'
It turns out that Digital Basic is the smallest package we can get. Small, as in hundreds of channels, which includes Rogers on Demand and 27 timeshifting channels. Most of which we will never watch. Ever.
We could purchase the digital box instead of renting it. It costs about two year's worth of renting.
We could resort to just Netflix but I would miss Mr. D and Republic of Doyle. Mind you, I could always watch them online.
For now, we're sticking with Digital Basic.
Total monthly cost?
$52.49!
I want my analog back.

Ugh, that's so annoying. The only channels I want are 4-13!
ReplyDeleteTomorrow we are going to cancel it altogether and see if we can make do.
DeleteI would love to get rid of our satellite. It costs $80 per month now! It's ridiculous. But hubby won't allow it. He loves his sports channels and he is not one to watch anything on the computer (not savvy like me).
ReplyDeleteThat's pricey. Someone suggested FIBE or even purchasing a digital antenna.
DeleteOur cable cost is huge. Hubs insists on having everything. I think the only channels we don't have are the multicultural ones. I've tried to pitch Netflix as an alternative, but he won't do it.
ReplyDeleteOurs is, too. We can't bundle services since my phone is technically with FIDO, and home line and Internet is with Bell.
DeleteCome soccer season, we'll be spending a lot of time at DH's mother's house.
No cable here for over 5 yrs - DVDs and watching online via the network websites. A few friends have netflix and we will probably get it once DS is a little older
ReplyDeleteFive years, huh? I'm impressed. Better still, I'm inspired to try the same. :)
Deletein the same boat here..I also wanted to downgrade,,my cable (Rogers)is costing me $77 a month!! Grrr...also was thinking of just going with Netflix,,but I find we dont get much on Netflix here,,mostly old shows and movies..:( ...I dont want to miss my shows..
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. My kids are actually quite content with Netflix and I hardly watch tv myself. DH is the one who falls asleep on the sofa each night with the tv on. LOL I think with the money we'd save, I'm willing to cancel it altogether.
DeleteI just had the same shocker. Our "basic" cable is 45$. I was so shocked, I almost swore at the kid on the phone(bit my tongue though). Especially now that they don't have analog, it's almost like we are forced to pay this money.
ReplyDeleteYou're totally right. They have taken the choice away from us. But then, I hear you can buy a digital antenna?
DeleteOh I won't even tell you how much our cable bill is!! We just chalk it up to entertainment and try not to cry when the bill shows up. Sad!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine. It seems we're not left with much choice. Anyway, we're going to try living without cable for a while. Which should be interesting...
DeleteThanks for taking the time to leave a comment here on Toronto Teacher Mom. Hope you have a great day!
