What You May Not Know About Me
Friday, July 04, 2014A few months ago, I happened across a tweet from @stephanieruns and yes, she's a runner. We got on the topic of racing and, while I have only ever run a 5k Warrior Dash obstacle course and a 5k CIBC Run for the Cure, Stephanie's dedication to and passion for running inspired me to join her in the 5 Peaks Trail Run taking place next weekend.
@stephanieruns @5PeaksRun LOL I just signed up!

But there's something I haven't told you.
I. Hate. Running.
I would rather scrub toilets than subject myself to the tortures inherent in running uphill, gasping for breath and feeling like my legs will give out at any moment. Now, I've never claimed to be in any kind of half-decent shape but I never thought of myself as being terribly out of shape either. My preferred physical activities are yoga, Zumba and bike riding. I have experienced many benefits from yoga including increased flexibility, body awareness and some muscle toning. Zumba and bike riding are fun ways to boost my cardio and are fairly low impact. But running... I find little enjoyment in running and what enjoyment I do find depends on where I run. I prefer running through wooded areas surrounded by nature. Which is why I'm looking forward to the 5 Peaks Trail Run at Rattlesnake Point. In the meantime, I'm trying to 'train' as best as I can and am using MapMyRun to keep track of my progress. Am I running this race to win? Not in the typical sense, no. I'm running it to challenge myself to do something I don't typically care to do to prove to myself that I can at least make it to the finish line knowing I gave it my best shot. Because that's what counts, right?

That's great that you are motivating yourself to do something that you normally wont!
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit of a challenge to find the motivation to get up and go but once I'm back from a run in the neighbourhood, there's a strange feeling of satisfaction afterwards.
Deletegood luck on your run
ReplyDeleteThank you! Only one day to go.
DeleteYou "just" did a warrior obstacle run... LOL. That is an amazing accomplishment as those are brutal!
ReplyDeleteLooking back, I wonder how I did it. Of course, I was younger then...
DeleteI think it's admirable to go outside your 'normal' ... truly brave as it's not something I would do....lol. Good luck gorgeous I'm sure you will surprise yourself even at how well you do!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Darlene! Though I know I will feel proud once I cross the finish line, I'll be grateful when it's over. I'm really not cut out for this. LOL

DeleteHow was it! I'm so impressed by you and inspired to sign up for the run at the Kortright Centre. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was such a scenic run that it was hard not to stop and take pictures. LOL The last km was a tough one but having perfect strangers and even three-year-olds cheer me on made a world of difference. Did you end up signing up for the run?
DeleteGood for you for stepping out of your comfort zone!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It sure gave me a sense of accomplishment.
DeleteIt's so awesome that your doing this even thought you dont like it! I hate running So I totally understand! I few years ago I tried to really get into it and the only way I was able to semi enjoy it is by barefoot running.
ReplyDeleteBarefoot running? I've never tried that before. Why do you prefer it over regular running?
DeleteThe thing is to not give up...our lives are busy and sometime more challenging than others. If you have to take a break that's ok but get back to it asap. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd it's always easier to give up, right? I'm very good at making excuses. But I'm glad I stuck to it and made it to the finish line. :)
DeleteKeep up the hard work!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jeff!
DeleteI want to run, but, like you, I hate running!!! Thanks for the great story!

ReplyDeleteI love running. I CRAVE it. Good luck with your race!
ReplyDeleteI hate running too, mostly because I would need to wear more than one bra and it still would not help.
ReplyDeletewould rather scrub toilets than subject myself to the tortures inherent in running uphill, lol Me too!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not how fast you get there.. it's that you did it. WTG!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind running. I think it is great that you signed up to do this as doing things outside our comfort box has to be good for us :)
ReplyDeleteStephen S

ReplyDeleteThe only time in my life that I enjoyed running was when I was 13 and it was just once! lol Then my arthritis took over unfortunately! You are a real inspiration though!
ReplyDeletethe only time i run is if i am being chased and even then i would probably stop and face the chaser lol

ReplyDeleteGood for you!
ReplyDeleteAre you still running? :)
