Red Prince Apple - Taste at its Peak
Monday, February 02, 2015
What is sweet, juicy and red all over? Is that too broad a description for you? Let me add that it's also crisp, tangy and high in antioxidants. Introducing the Red Prince apple, known for its unique flavour combination and nutrient-rich skin. Yet, what makes this Ontario apple variety even more unique is that it is only available for a limited time. Unlike other local apples which are usually sold after harvest in the fall, Red Prince apples, donned in their royal red, begin to appear in-store in the winter and are available through to summer.
Did you know that moms have a very specific criteria when choosing apples? According to a July 2014 survey, moms love apples because they are healthy, convenient and stay fresh longer than most other fruits. When purchasing apples, most moms seek out fresh apples that remain crisp and that are both sweet and tangy in flavour. Since the Red Prince apple is a natural cross between the Golden Delicious and Red Jonathan varieties, it has thus inherited the best properties of both. It's sweet and juicy like the former and crisp and tangy like the latter. Among the remaining criteria moms consider are: its anti-oxidant properties, bright red colour and that they are locally grown. Luckily, the Red Price apple meets all of these criteria. Plus, it's perfect as a nutritious snack, tossed in a salad, cooked, baked or even juiced.
This past weekend, I headed out to my local Metro store and picked up a bag of Red Prince apples. It was like love at first sight. I'm not sure what it is about the colour red, but I find myself awfully attracted to red fruits. So needless to say, Red Prince and I hit it off quite well.
Want to sample taste at its peak? There will be select sampling opportunities in Sobeys and Loblaws/Provigo stores in Ontario and Quebec this month so be sure to head on out for a chance to try some Red Prince apples:
- Metro & Loblaws in Ontario & Quebec on February 7 and 8
- Sobeys Ontario on February 7 and 8
- Sobeys Quebec on February 21 and 22

It's now my son's favourite apple.
DeleteI haven't bought apples in so long because my little girl has some sensitivities with them, but I've been trying to slowly introduce them again, so far so good! Couldn't even buy them for the rest of us because she would want them, and then she would break out in all kinds of rashes. Hopefully she outgrows this soon....I'd love to grab a bag of these yummy apples!
ReplyDeleteThe poor thing. That just seems so unfair that she can't have apples. Here's hoping that will soon change.
