BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

In today's classroom, having a personal electronic device can come in extremely handy, especially in situations where schools have limited access to technology. For example, if we look at the number of tablets, chromebooks and cloudbooks that we have at my school, we have a ratio of approximately 1 to 8. And even then, there are times when the device is not charged, not working properly or missing altogether. For this reason, I allow my older students to bring their own devices. However, I make sure I clearly lay down the expectations for the responsible use of technology and our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy.

Students are only allowed to use personal electronic devices when all three of the following conditions have been met:

  1. It is for educational purposes.
  2. They have their teacher's permission.
  3. It is under the direct supervision of their teacher.
I find I have to remind students of our BYOD policy while on supervision at lunch recess and so I decided to create a poster using Google Drawings as a visual reminder. If you'd like to download a copy, click on the thumbnail below. You can also save a copy and edit it, should you so choose. I adjusted the size of the canvas so it can fit onto a letter size sheet of paper.

If you have any other tips on how to encourage the responsible use of personal electronic devices in the classroom, please leave a comment. I'd love to hear your ideas!

    1. Aw, thanks Kathy! I sometimes feel like a broken record, reminding the students about our BYOD policy all the time. LOL

  2. I have tried BYOD with my grade 7 and 8s. But despite going over the rules and laying the groundwork, too many of my students were using their devices inappropriately. It was very disappointing.

    1. That happens in our school, too, but mostly during transitional periods when there are less teachers around, such as during lunch recess. I only wish there were an easier solution...
